Medical and Burial Help

Miscarriage at Home

Miscarriage at Home

Miscarriage at Home

For miscarriage without medical intervention/ surgery/ medication:

You may be able to complete your miscarriage at home. Often times the first sign of a miscarriage is spotting or cramping. Other times you may not have physical signs and only learn of the miscarriage via ultrasound.

Consult with your doctor if you should wait for your body to progress on it's own or if you need additional medical intervention. Often times your body will go into labor and deliver the baby.

Things to consider:

· Time: Some miscarriages are over with quickly, others can take up to 3-4 weeks. Ectopic pregnancies and other procedures might need to heal for a couple months.

· Medical Risks: If too much time passes, infection can occur

· Emotional Toll / Being alone: Seek out loved ones, church community, therapist, or other support

What can I do with my baby’s body if I deliver him or her at home?

Many times, in early pregnancy, your body may dispel the baby without you being aware of it. This is natural, and you should not be concerned about trying to save an unidentifiable body. God knows your love for your baby and does not blame you for things out of your control.

In cases where you can identify a body, try to keep the baby in a saline solution or water as much as possible until the burial. If the body starts to shrivel from loss of moisture, it should rehydrate after some time in a saline solution. You will need to keep the container in the refrigerator, although this is not recommended for more than several days. If you anticipate the burial will be delayed, the baby’s body may also be kept in the freezer. In this case, do not keep the baby in fluid.

In the Hospital

Miscarriage at Home

Miscarriage at Home

If you deliver your baby at a hospital, it is important to know your parental rights and have a plan in place for your baby's body.

"If you have a moment ahead of time, it can be very helpful to have a birth plan written up explaining that you want your baby’s remains, with copies for your doctor and the hospital staff. If you give birth at a hospital, make sure you tell the staff (ahead of time if possible) that you want to take the baby home... Older gestation babies (the age will vary, but starting at around 18-20 weeks) are usually kept in the hospital morgue and are easy to request for burial.

Even if you requested genetic testing, you should still be able to come back to the hospital to retrieve the baby. If you have a D&C, do tell them ahead of time that you will be wanting to take the baby home. It is required that any tissue the doctor removes during a D&C be sent to pathology so that everything can be identified. You will still be able to go to the hospital lab in a day or so (varies with hospital) to pick up your baby. He or she will most likely be in a specimen cup. It is NOT recommended to try to open the cup and go through it. You can still bury the cup in a casket and/or wrapped in some fabric. If you have surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy, you can also request the body. As with the D&C, everything will be sent to pathology, but you should still be able to come and pick up the baby.

Funeral Home Resources in Metro-Detroit Area

Considerations for Funeral Homes

Ask your local funeral home about special services and discounts for your baby. It is common for funeral homes to have a nominal fee or no fee to facilitate burial or cremation of a baby or fetus. Service charges for any type of ceremony for your baby are typically heavily discounted, as well as any merchandise you may select. They may have their own packages or programs available. Below are just a few places that have such offers. Please check with each establishment that their policies have not changed.  We cannot guarantee any offers or prices for any funeral home or cemetery.

Cemetery Information in Metro-Detroit

Considerations for Cemeteries

Most local cemeteries offer heavily discounted or free burial space for infants, so it is best to ask if you have a specific cemetery that you prefer for your family. Here are a few local cemeteries that offer free burial in their infant section. (This means that your baby will not be buried in your family plot, unless you choose to pay for that.)

The Mt. Elliott Cemeteries

Burial in their infant section is available for miscarriages, stillborn babies, and infants. Older children may also be buried in the infant section at some locations (such as Guardian Angels). The family is only responsible for purchasing the stone. Everything else (grave, service, etc) is free of charge.

Please note that the Mt. Elliott location in Detroit does not have available space in their infant section…you will directed to go to one of these other locations….
